FG to Scrap JSS and SSS? Here's What It Means

The FG to Scrap JSS and SSS announcement has sparked conversations across Nigeria after the Federal Government revealed plans to replace the current Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) structure with a single 12-year compulsory basic education system.
The proposal was announced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, during the 2026 National Council on Education meeting. According to him, the reform is aimed at reducing the number of children who drop out of school before completing their education.
Under the current system, students spend six years in primary school, three years in JSS, three years in SSS, and four years in university. The government now wants to merge the secondary school stages into one continuous 12-year programme before higher education.
The minister explained that many students fail to move from primary school to junior secondary school because there are not enough secondary schools across the country. While Nigeria has about 80,000 public primary schools, it has only around 15,000 public junior secondary schools, creating a major gap in access to education.
The government believes the new system will help keep more children in school, reduce the country’s growing number of out-of-school children, and make learning more consistent from primary school through secondary education.
What Happens Next? Although many people believe the policy has already taken effect, that is not the case. The proposal still needs approval from the National Council on Education before it can be implemented nationwide. This means students currently in JSS or SSS will continue under the existing system until the government officially announces the rollout.
Parents, teachers and education experts are expected to closely follow the discussions as the proposal moves through the approval process.
If approved, the reform could become one of the biggest changes to Nigeria’s education system in decades, affecting millions of students across the country.
For now, Nigerians are being advised not to panic, as FG to Scrap JSS and SSS remains a proposal awaiting final approval.
