Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing food security and infrastructure development. During a recent working visit to the Lagos Central Food Security Systems and Logistics Park (LHP) in Ketu, Ereyun, Epe, he shared his vision to increase the state’s food security from 18% to over 50%.
The 220-hectare facility, championed by Origin Tech Group, is set to become the largest food logistics hub in Africa and the second-largest globally after France’s Rungis International Market. Initiated less than two years ago, the project promises to transform Lagos’ food ecosystem by improving accessibility, stabilizing prices, and reducing post-harvest losses.
Governor Sanwo-Olu announced that the first phase of the project would be completed by the second quarter of 2025. “This hub represents a pivotal step toward achieving food sufficiency and affordability for Lagosians,” he said. “By reducing wastage and optimizing supply chains, we aim to stabilize food prices and mitigate economic disruptions.”
The LHP will feature state-of-the-art facilities, including a 14,000-capacity abattoir, dry storage covering 11 football fields, and a jetty for waterway transportation. A 250mm dual carriageway concrete road network will enhance logistics efficiency.
Prince S. J. Samuel, Executive Chairman of Origin Tech Group, praised the project’s vision, stating, “This project is a testament to the visionary leadership of His Excellency and his team. Despite economic challenges, we are committed to delivering this world-class facility on schedule.” He assured that the hub would be completed before the second anniversary of Sanwo-Olu’s second term, promising Lagosians a 50% reduction in food prices upon its launch.
Beyond the LHP, the state plans to establish middle-level market hubs in Ajah, Agege, Oregun, and Ikorodu. These hubs will complement the pioneering initiative in Idi-Oro, Mushin, launched last year. They will act as distribution points linked to the central hub, ensuring seamless food supply across Lagos and neighboring communities.
The project is expected to create thousands of jobs, strengthen the agricultural value chain, and position Lagos as a leader in sustainable food systems. Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the initiative’s transformative potential: “We are writing our destiny with this initiative. This hub will stabilize prices, transform Lagos’ food systems, and provide Lagosians with the food sufficiency they deserve.”
The Lagos Central Food Security Systems and Logistics Park stands as a beacon of innovation, addressing critical food security challenges while solidifying Lagos’ position as an economic powerhouse in Sub-Saharan Africa.
