Aliko Dangote, Chairman and CEO of Dangote Refinery, met with Prime Minister Dickson Mitchell on Thursday at the $20 billion petrochemical plant in Lagos. The meeting included a tour of the refinery and fertilizer plant, showcasing Dangote’s ambitious project.
During their discussions, Dangote emphasized the potential for a trade agreement that would involve importing crude oil from the Caribbean and exporting refined petroleum products back to the region. “We are looking at possibly purchasing crude and selling our petroleum products. We export everywhere,” he stated.
Prime Minister Mitchell, who also serves as Chairman of the Caribbean States, praised the refinery as a landmark achievement for Nigeria and Africa. He commended the facility’s cutting-edge technology and the impressive work of young engineers, noting, “This is a tribute to Mr. Dangote’s great vision for Africa.”
The Dangote refinery, set to become the largest in Africa and Europe, aims to process 650,000 barrels of oil per day, addressing Nigeria’s heavy reliance on imported fuel—a situation that has persisted despite the country being the continent’s leading oil producer. With full operations expected soon, the refinery promises to transform Nigeria’s refining capacity and strengthen its economy.
