Nigeria has fully settled its outstanding debt of ₦85 billion to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), marking a significant milestone in its financial contributions to the regional body.
This announcement was made by Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, during the 66th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government held in Abuja.
Touray highlighted that under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria has cleared all outstanding levies from 2023 to date—a feat the country has not achieved in nearly two decades. He also noted the challenges posed by delayed contributions from other member states but commended Nigeria for taking the lead in fulfilling its financial obligations.
The ECOWAS President expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and the Nigerian government for their unwavering support for the organization’s initiatives.
Touray also extended appreciation to Ghana’s outgoing President, Nana Akufo-Addo, for his contributions to ECOWAS, as he prepares to leave office on January 7, 2025.
