The lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced a 30 percent reduction in the fare of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line. The announcement was made alongside the commissioning of the newly constructed Abule Egba Bus Terminal, a critical infrastructure project aimed at enhancing public transportation in the state.
With the revised fare structure, the cost of a trip between Agbado and Oyingbo has been reduced from N1,500 to N1,000. Governor Sanwo-Olu stated that the fare reduction was implemented to encourage wider adoption of the Red Line and to provide financial relief to commuters amid prevailing economic challenges.
“We have reviewed the numbers and have therefore decided to implement a 30 percent reduction on the fare for the Red Line,” the governor announced. “This means that a trip from Agbado to Oyingbo will now cost N1,000.”
The LRMT Red Line, which commenced passenger operations on September 15, 2024, initially ran six trips daily but expanded to nine trips per day as of February 10, 2025.
During the commissioning of the Abule Egba Bus Terminal, located along the Oshodi-Abule Egba Expressway, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the significance of the facility in improving connectivity and easing commuting challenges for residents. The terminal is strategically positioned to complement Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) operations along the Oshodi-Abule Egba corridor.
“This Abule Egba Bus Terminal is a testament to our administration’s commitment to providing efficient and accessible public transport for all Lagosians,” the governor stated. “It will serve as a vital hub, seamlessly integrating with the BRT network and offering a comfortable and organized transit experience.”
He further highlighted the role the terminal would play in the state’s broader transportation strategy, which includes the ongoing Quality Bus Corridor (QBC) project and the planned expansion of the BRT system. He noted that the terminal would be instrumental in future extensions to Sango, reinforcing the administration’s focus on developing integrated, multimodal transport solutions to meet the state’s growing transportation demands.
The event was attended by several state dignitaries, including Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Barr. ‘Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, Head of Service (HOS) Mr. Olabode Agoro, and Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Olawale Musa, who represented the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi.
