Making history at the Adidas Atlanta City Games on Saturday, May 17, 2025, was Nigerian sprint phenom Favour Ofili. She put on an incredible show at Piedmont Park, setting a new world record in the women’s 150-meter race with a timing of 15.85 seconds, in ideal wind conditions of 2.0 meters per second.
It was a record-breaking run that marked Ofili’s name in world history, therefore this wasn’t just another race. At 16.23 seconds, the previous world record set by Olympic champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo in 2018, is now eclipsed by Ofili’s lightning-fast pace.
Known for her quick starts and unrelenting speed, Ofili made history by becoming the first female competitor to finish the 150-meter straight-track race in less than 16 seconds. Saturday’s performance has put the infrequently held event squarely in the spotlight, even though it isn’t represented at the Olympics or World Championships.
Piedmont Park crowds went berserk when she crossed the finish line, and fans, athletes, and celebrities all praised her on social media. The athlete from Delta state raised the national flag high once more, and Nigerians both domestically and internationally couldn’t contain their pride.
By doing this, Ofili has not only broken the previous world record but also the records for Nigeria and Africa. She is currently being praised as one of the most promising athletes en route to the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Paris.
Favour Ofili has made her appearance, and she’s only just getting started.
