The Senate has officially confirmed General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd) as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence, following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s nomination earlier in the week. His confirmation marks the return of the former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) to a central position in the nation’s security architecture.
Musa’s confirmation came after a thorough screening session during which senators praised his long career, strategic experience, and deep knowledge of Nigeria’s complex security landscape. Lawmakers cited his frontline leadership in counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations as a key strength at a time when the country faces heightened security challenges across multiple regions.
Accepting his new role, the retired four-star general pledged to strengthen inter-agency cooperation, enhance operational efficiency across the armed forces, and pursue reforms that will improve the welfare, capacity, and readiness of military personnel. Musa also assured the Senate and Nigerians that he would bring a results-driven and intelligence-focused approach to tackling insecurity.
His appointment follows the recent resignation of former Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru Abubakar. With Musa now confirmed, the Ministry of Defence enters a new phase that many observers believe could shape the future of Nigeria’s national security strategy.
General Musa is expected to assume office immediately and begin briefings with military service chiefs and defence leadership.
