British-Nigerian boxing superstar Anthony Joshua was involved in a serious road accident today, Monday, December 29, 2025, on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, Nigerian authorities and eyewitnesses confirm.
According to multiple local and international news outlets, the former world heavyweight champion was riding as a passenger in a Lexus SUV when it lost control and crashed into a stationary truck on the busy highway in the Makun area near Sagamu around 11 a.m.
Eyewitness accounts and video footage circulating online show Joshua being helped out of the wreckage, visibly shaken but conscious. Officials say he sustained only minor injuries and was promptly taken to a hospital for medical care.
Tragically, two occupants of the vehicle died at the scene of the crash. Police and rescue workers confirmed the fatalities and have conveyed the bodies to a morgue in Sagamu.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Ogun State Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the incident. Preliminary findings suggest the SUV may have been travelling at high speed and lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre before crashing into the parked truck on the shoulder of the expressway.
Despite the frightening crash, Joshua’s injuries are reported to be non-life-threatening, and he remains under medical supervision. Fans and fellow athletes around the world have taken to social media to share messages of support and prayers for the boxer and the victims’ families.
This shocking incident comes just days after Joshua’s knockout victory over YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Miami on December 19, 2025, making the news all the more jarring for the sporting world.
Authorities urge motorists to exercise caution on Nigeria’s highways, especially during the busy festive travel period, as investigations continue.
