One of the longest-serving traditional rulers in Nigeria, the legendary monarch ruled for an astounding 65 years before passing away on Sunday, July 13, 2025.

Oba Adetona, born on May 10, 1934, became Awujale in 1960, shortly before Nigeria attained independence. He developed into a significant voice in national affairs over the years, valued for his integrity, wisdom, and unwavering faith in advancement. Ijebu-Ode became a symbol of progress, pride, and tradition under his leadership.
His most enduring legacy is the Ojude Oba Festival, which now attracts visitors from around the globe to honor Ijebu heritage and culture. During his rule, his people experienced economic expansion, unity, and international recognition.
From all over the nation, tributes are flooding in. In the wake of former President Buhari’s death on the same day, Governor Dapo Abiodun referred to it as a “double tragedy,” while President Bola Tinubu called him a “towering traditional ruler.”
As Ijebuland starts customary mourning rituals, the palace is anticipated to make an announcement regarding burial arrangements shortly. “Who will wear the crown next?” is a question that many people are asking.
Despite his passing, Oba Sikiru Adetona’s influence will live on.
