In a significant legal victory, filmmaker Chinenye Nworah and her production company, GCM Giant Creative Media Limited, have successfully defended their ownership of trademarks and copyrights associated with the Netflix series “Shanty Town.” The Nigerian Trademark Registry and the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) have ruled in favor of Nworah, dismissing petitions filed by actress Ini Edo and Minnie Empire Productions Limited (MEP).
The Trademark Registry rejected Edo and MEP’s petition on January 10, 2024, confirming Nworah’s exclusive ownership of the trademarks “SCAR” and “SHANTY TOWN.” Similarly, the NCC upheld the validity of Nworah’s copyright certificates for the literary and audiovisual works “Shanty Town” on July 24, 2024.
The legal team at Olisa Agbakoba Legal played a crucial role in securing these victories, demonstrating their commitment to protecting the rights of creative individuals and companies in intellectual property disputes. The rulings solidify Nworah’s ownership of the intellectual property related to Netflix Series and highlight the importance of protecting creative works and ensuring fair compensation for artists.
