Sifiso Dabengwa, the former CEO of MTN Group, passed away Monday morning after a prolonged battle with cancer. Dabengwa, who led the telecom giant from 2011 to 2015, was widely regarded as a significant figure in the telecommunications industry. He was 64 years old.
Dabengwa’s tenure as CEO of MTN was marked by both achievements and challenges. He guided the company through a period of rapid expansion across Africa and the Middle East, but his leadership was also tested during a critical time when MTN was hit with a record $5.2 billion fine by Nigerian authorities. The fine, imposed in 2015, was due to MTN’s failure to disconnect over five million unregistered SIM cards. Dabengwa resigned shortly after, taking responsibility for the situation as the company sought ways to negotiate the fine.
Dabengwa had deep ties to MTN, having served as the CEO of MTN Nigeria until 2006 before assuming the top role at the group level. His leadership was characterized by a commitment to innovation and the belief that technology could transform lives.
South African media outlets have quoted a family spokesperson, Themba Sibanyoni, confirming Dabengwa’s passing. Sibanyoni described him as “a titan in the telecommunications industry and an astute businessman.” He added, “His tenure as CEO of MTN Group from 2011 to 2015 was marked by visionary leadership, integrity, and dedication that drove significant advancements in the industry.”
Beyond the boardroom, Dabengwa was known for his advocacy for education and his passion for using technology to create positive change. “He left a legacy that extends far beyond the business world,” Sibanyoni said.
An MTN executive in Johannesburg, South Africa, stated that the company has been in mourning. “We received the news of his death with shock and heavy hearts. He remains a respected member of the MTN family, and his loss is deeply felt by all who knew him.”
Dabengwa is remembered not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his personal commitment to making a difference. His legacy will continue to inspire those in the telecommunications industry and beyond.
