The Lagos State Government has assured residents that the Opebi-Mende-Ojota Link Bridge is on track for completion before the end of this year. Contractors are reportedly working diligently to ensure this project, along with others across the state, meets the set targets.
The Opebi-Mende-Ojota Link Bridge, along with its connecting arterial roads, was conceptualized to address significant traffic challenges in Lagos. Once completed, it will provide alternative routes for motorists traveling from areas like Toyin, Allen, and Opebi to access Ojota. Additionally, it will facilitate smoother connections for those commuting from Maryland to Ikeja and its surrounding regions.
As of December 2023, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced that the project had reached approximately 65% completion. He expressed optimism about its readiness for commuters by the second quarter of 2024. However, recent updates indicate that the government is now pushing for an even earlier completion, aiming to deliver the bridge before the year’s end.
This bridge is part of a broader infrastructure development strategy by the Lagos State Government. Since May 2019, under Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration, the state has completed 172 road projects, totaling approximately 177.93 kilometers. Currently, there are 253 ongoing projects, which, upon completion, will add an additional 298.22 kilometers of road infrastructure.
Demonstrating a strong commitment to infrastructural advancement, the Lagos State Government has allocated ₦550.689 billion, representing 24.28% of its 2024 budget, to the development, maintenance, and completion of various infrastructure projects across the state.
The completion of the Opebi-Mende-Ojota Link Bridge is expected to significantly alleviate traffic congestion in the state. By offering alternative routes and improving connectivity between key areas, the bridge will enhance the daily commuting experience for residents and contribute to the overall economic growth of Lagos.
