The koala method is to nap when life throws you a heartbreak!
Australian koalas, cute animals that eat eucalyptus, may have the answer to how to handle rejection. They are known to sleep for as much as 20 hours every day, and even during mating season, they remain unfazed by rejection.
In order to get a female to respond, male koalas make loud mating calls. But what if no one answers? They just roll over and fall back asleep without complaining or worrying. What a master class in emotional dispassion!
It’s not that koalas don’t experience disappointment. Because they eat nutrient-poor eucalyptus leaves, their metabolism is slow, which contributes to their relaxed disposition. Even when romance fails, they have perfected the art of napping as a way to save energy.
Thus, perhaps humans can learn something from this. Perhaps we should all learn to press pause, take a break, and move on rather than losing sleep over heartbreak. Why can’t we sleep off rejection if koalas can?
Koalas serve as a reminder that sometimes recovering by doing nothing at all but sleeping is the best course of action.
