During a recent interview on Channels Television’s “Politics Tonight,” Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu discussed critical issues facing Lagos State, including transportation, road development, and the ongoing efforts to alleviate the hardships residents are facing in Nigeria.
He highlighted the recent signing of the new ₦70,000 minimum wage by President Bola Tinubu, which followed extensive negotiations between government officials, labor unions, and the private sector.
Governor Sanwo-Olu clarified that Lagos is offering a minimum wage of ₦85,000, not to outdo other states, but based on its financial capabilities.
“I want to emphasize that our minimum wage, which we have set in consultation with our labor unions, stands at ₦85,000,” he stated. “This decision isn’t about competition; it’s rooted in our ability to sustain it. We recognize that living costs in Lagos are higher, and we are fully aware of this reality.”
He also noted that the state had already increased salaries for workers earlier this year and expressed his ambition to raise the minimum wage to ₦100,000 in January 2025.
“I genuinely hope to return in January with good news about increasing Lagos’ minimum wage to ₦100,000, not to overshadow anyone else, but to ensure that our citizens receive a fair living wage,” Sanwo-Olu added. “It’s important for the people to see that their government is committed to their welfare.”
