The first phase of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line is set to officially begin its full passenger service on Tuesday, October 15, 2024. This significant development marks the transition from test runs to fee-paying operations along the 27-kilometer route connecting Oyingbo to Agbado in Ogun State.
Engr. Abimbola Akinajo, the Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), announced the launch in a statement released on Thursday by Kolawole Ojelabi, LAMATA’s Head of Corporate Communications. The service was initially commissioned by President Bola Tinubu on February 29, 2024.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is anticipated to preside over the launch event, which will include a ceremonial ride with passengers on the inaugural fee-paying trip, marking the commencement of regular services. This milestone is expected to significantly improve transportation options for residents, particularly those commuting between Agbado, Ikeja, Oshodi, and Lagos Island
In preparation for the official launch, daily train operations will start at 6:00 a.m. from Agbado. Previously, during the free test runs, trains departed Oyingbo at 9:00 a.m., arriving in Agbado by 10:07 a.m. The new schedule has been adjusted based on commuter feedback, prioritizing morning departures from Agbado to better serve those heading to key commercial areas
To facilitate smoother travel, connecting bus services will be available at the Oyingbo bus terminal, enhancing the integration between rail and road transportation. This initiative aims to reduce travel times and provide added convenience for daily commuters.
As with the Blue Line, which has been operational for over a year, passengers on the Red Line will require a Cowry card for access. These cards can be purchased at any of the eight train terminals within the first phase, allowing riders to board as the service officially begins its fee-paying operations tomorrow.
