On Sunday, July 15, 2024, initial reports sparked confusion regarding the Lagos State government’s stance on “danfo” buses. Clarifying the situation, it was revealed that rather than a complete ban, the government plans to implement a comprehensive policy aimed at enhancing mass transit efficiency and safety for residents.
Under the proposed policy, which is set to commence on October 1st, 2024, all mass transit buses, including danfo and korope buses, will undergo rigorous standardization tests to qualify for the Bus Reform Initiative (BRI).
Mr. Giwa, Special Adviser to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, emphasized that danfo buses meeting Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) standards will operate as Mid-capacity buses. Similarly, korope buses meeting these standards will be integrated into the First Mile Last Mile services, primarily serving interior roads from Obalende/CMS to Ajah (specifically Eleko).
Key aspects of the policy include mandatory roadworthiness checks for buses, professional driver training at the state driving institute, and strict enforcement of designated routes. Additionally, the initiative will introduce an e-ticketing system to enhance passenger convenience and combat unauthorized pickups and stops.
Addressing stakeholders’ concerns, a meeting held on June 27th involved Transport Union heads, key operators, and government officials. A communique signed at the meeting reassured stakeholders and clarified misconceptions about the policy.
In preparation for the rollout, Transport Operators are encouraged to register for new franchises with the Ministry of Transportation to ensure compliance and operational readiness.
This proactive approach by the Lagos State government aims to modernize the transportation sector, ensuring safer, more efficient transit options for residents while addressing operational challenges associated with existing bus services.
