The recent closure of the Independence Bridge in Lagos has led to unprecedented traffic congestion, leaving commuters stranded for hours and prompting public out cry
On March 17, 2025, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, announced the planned closure of the Independence Bridge (Marina bound) for essential maintenance and rehabilitation works. The closure began on April 1 and was expected to last until the end of May 2025. This decision was made to ensure the safety and structural integrity of the bridge.
Traffic Diversion Plans
The Lagos State Government introduced a two-month traffic diversion plan to ease disruptions. The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, outlined alternative routes for motorists. Those traveling to Victoria Island from Ahmadu Bello Way were advised to use Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, Akin Adesola Street, Falomo Roundabout, and Obafemi Awolowo Road to Ring Road.
Despite these efforts, the closure caused massive gridlock across Lagos, particularly affecting commuters heading to the Island and other central business areas.
Commuter Experiences
The first few days after the closure saw severe gridlock with motorists spending up to four hours in traffic. Frustrated Lagosians voiced their anger on social media, accusing authorities of poor communication and inadequate traffic management. Many commercial and private workers arrived late to work or missed appointments altogether.
Government’s Response
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu issued an apology to residents, acknowledging the pain and discomfort caused. He emphasized that the maintenance work was non negotiable due to safety concerns and asked Lagosians to bear with the temporary hardship for the sake of long-term benefit.
Reopening Announcement
Bringing a wave of relief, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced during an inspection that the Independence Bridge would now be reopened by 1:30 PM today. The decision follows rapid progress in ongoing repair work and a reassessment of the structural sections of the bridge.
The reopening of the Independence Bridge comes as a major relief to residents and businesses across Lagos. While the need for infrastructure upgrades remains critical, the incident highlights the importance of thorough coordination and communication in large-scale urban projects. For now, Lagosians can look forward to smoother commutes once again.
