Raised in a family deeply rooted in education, Liang’s father, a primary school teacher, instilled in him an early curiosity for learning. This foundation led Liang to Zhejiang University, one of China’s most esteemed institutions. He graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor of Engineering in electronic information engineering and later earned a Master’s degree in information and communication engineering in 2010. Liang’s professional career began with High-Flyer Quant, a quantitative hedge fund he co-founded in 2015. Known for its use of AI-driven trading strategies, High-Flyer gained recognition as one of China’s leading hedge funds. Under Liang’s leadership, the fund’s deep-learning branch, Fire-Flyer, began exploring applications of AI beyond finance.
In 2023, Liang took a daring step by pivoting Fire-Flyer’s resources to create DeepSeek, an initiative focused on artificial general intelligence (AGI). Liang was driven by a mission rather than immediate commercial gains. “Basic science research has a very low return on investment, but we’re doing this because we believe in the mission,” Liang said in an interview with Chinese tech publication 36Kr.
