The Lagos Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) is embracing technology to make tax compliance simpler and more affordable for both individuals and businesses. Abideen Akande, Special Adviser to the Executive Chairman of LIRS, discussed these advancements during an appearance on Business Incorporated on Channels Television.
Akande said that LIRS is continuously modernizing its processes to ensure a smoother experience for taxpayers. He noted that technology has revolutionized tax management and collection, and LIRS is keen to leverage these innovations to improve efficiency and ease the burden on taxpayers.
“We aim to deploy technology in a way that makes compliance easier and cheaper for the taxpayer,” Akande said.
Looking ahead to 2025, Akande promised substantial improvements in the taxpayer experience, including an enhanced digital interface and faster service delivery. One key area of focus is the automation of services such as obtaining tax certificates, which has already made the process quicker and more user-friendly.
LIRS has also launched a web-based platform that allows taxpayers to handle various transactions online, such as making payments and filing returns, without needing to visit physical offices. He said that this platform is crucial for reducing congestion and providing more efficient service.
The agency is also prioritizing better communication and engagement with taxpayers through real-time support and feedback. These efforts are all part of the initiative to modernize tax administration in Nigeria, making it easier for citizens to fulfill their tax obligations and improving revenue collection for Lagos State.
In December 2023, LIRS introduced the Eco Fiscal System (EFS) to streamline consumption tax collection in the hospitality sector. Additionally, the e-tax platform, or Enterprise Tax, has significantly improved access to tax information, facilitating seamless filing of returns and payments, and simplifying the process of obtaining tax clearance certificates.
LIRS’s technological advancements aim to boost tax compliance, enhance revenue collection, and contribute to a sustainable financial future for Lagos State.
