The Muhammadu Buhari Airport in Maiduguri, Borno State, has officially been upgraded to international status, with operations set to commence on January 1, 2025. This announcement was made during a visit by Borno State Governor Prof. Umara Babagana Zulum and key stakeholders to Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo.
Keyamo confirmed the upgrade on social media, highlighting the airport’s potential to enhance connectivity and economic growth in Nigeria’s North-East region. He noted that Maiduguri is well-equipped with the necessary infrastructure and population to support international flights, particularly from the Middle East.
The upgrade is expected to open new avenues for trade, travel, and tourism, linking Borno to global markets. Governor Zulum expressed his gratitude to President Tinubu and the Aviation Ministry, committing to provide political support for the airport’s operations. He also emphasized the importance of improving aviation safety and urged the government to expedite the creation of a national air carrier.
This development marks a significant milestone for the region, aiming to stimulate economic growth and position Maiduguri as a vital commercial hub.
