Meta is cutting about 600 roles across its artificial intelligence unit, Superintelligence Labs, as the Facebook parent company seeks to make its AI operations leaner and more responsive.
The layoffs will affect teams within Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research (FAIR), as well as groups focused on product-related AI and infrastructure, the company said on Wednesday. The newly formed TBD Lab, which develops Meta’s next-generation foundation models, will not be impacted.
Axios first reported the job cuts, citing an internal memo. Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang told employees the move was aimed at speeding up decision-making and increasing the scope and impact of each role. Meta said affected workers are encouraged to apply for other roles within the company.
The restructuring comes just a day after Meta announced a $27 billion financing deal with Blue Owl Capital, its largest-ever private capital agreement, to fund a massive new data center project. Analysts say the deal will help Meta meet its growing AI demands while shifting much of the upfront cost and risk to external partners.
Meta’s Superintelligence Labs was created in June to consolidate its fragmented AI efforts following leadership exits and criticism over the reception of its open-source Llama 4 model. The division brings together the company’s foundations, product, and FAIR teams under one structure, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg personally driving the unit’s AI recruitment and direction.
