MTN Nigeria plans to connect more than 8 million homes to its FibreX broadband network by 2028, up from about 50,000 currently, as it pushes to expand high-speed internet access across the country.
Egerton Idehen, MTN Nigeria’s Chief Broadband Officer, said the initiative is central to MTN’s goal of improving digital access for homes, small businesses, and public institutions.
“Our goal is clear — between 2026 and 2028, we want FibreX to reach over 8 million homes across Nigeria,” Idehen said during a media parley on Thursday. “This is about empowering people and communities to thrive in the digital economy.”
Launched in April 2025, FibreX is an upgraded version of MTN’s earlier fibre broadband service and aligns with the National Broadband Plan, which targets 70% broadband penetration by 2025. Nigeria’s fibre network is expected to expand from 35,000 km to 125,000 km under the plan.
MTN’s FibreX rollout will focus on fibre-to-the-home and fibre-to-the-business connections, offering faster, unlimited internet for students, remote workers, gamers, and small businesses. “We’re building a broadband experience for everyday life — reliability, low latency, and affordability,” Idehen said.
He added that the investment supports Nigeria’s National Digital Economy Policy and the Ministry of Communications’ fibre expansion goals. “Every kilometre of fibre we deploy strengthens Nigeria’s economic resilience,” he said.
To speed up deployment, MTN is partnering with infrastructure firms, state governments, and local contractors to enhance last-mile connectivity — the link between fibre networks and individual homes.
However, Idehen acknowledged that vandalism, inconsistent right-of-way charges, and affordability remain key challenges. MTN plans to prioritise deployment in residential clusters
