Tension is already building ahead of October 1st, when a protest is set to take place in Eagle Square in Abuja. Organizers are refusing to back down in the face of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s denial of permission to use the site. Frustrated with the state of the economy, the protest has brought security troops to the area, sparking fears of violence.
Although the military and police have been stationed in key locations throughout the capital to keep the peace, the residents are uncomfortable with their massive presence. A number of government employees who work close to the protest site have voiced their concerns, and some are even considering skipping work entirely on the day of the protest.
But the protest organizers aren’t giving up. They contend that Eagle Square is the property of the Nigerian people, and they want to use all available means to ensure that their views are heard. Will this protest turn into something larger or conclude with a nonviolent demonstration? As October 1 draws near, all eyes are focused on Eagle Square.
