OpenAI has introduced Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, a new feature that lets users search, compare, and purchase products directly within the app. The rollout begins in the United States with Etsy and Shopify merchants, powered by the newly open-sourced Agentic Commerce Protocol developed with Stripe.
“ChatGPT already helps millions of people find what to buy. Now it can help them buy it too,” OpenAI said in a post on X. The company confirmed that Instant Checkout is currently available to U.S.-based ChatGPT Free, Plus, and Pro users purchasing from Etsy sellers, with Shopify support coming soon.
Shoppers can type requests such as “a ceramic housewarming gift under $100,” and ChatGPT will return product listings with images, prices, and links. According to OpenAI, results are ranked solely on relevance to the query. Listings show where an item can be purchased, with rankings based on availability, price, quality, and seller type.
Users confirm shipping and payment details directly in ChatGPT, with merchants processing the transactions and deliveries through existing systems. Payments can be completed using credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Stripe’s Link. Pro and Plus subscribers can opt for pre-filled details to speed up checkout while retaining the option to review orders.
Buyers will also be able to track purchases inside ChatGPT, from confirmation to delivery updates. OpenAI said the feature aims to make shopping faster and more seamless while keeping merchants as the seller of record.
Merchants interested in joining can apply through OpenAI’s portal at chatgpt.com/merchants. Etsy and Shopify integrations are being handled directly, with no application required. OpenAI said expansion to additional regions is planned for next year.
