The Premier League will debut Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT) on April 12, 2025. This aims to enhance the accuracy, speed, and consistency of offside decisions. It will also help in addressing long-standing criticisms of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) delays.
SAOT leverages cutting-edge systems, including up to 30 high-speed cameras capturing 100 frames per second and tracking over 10,000 data points per player. These cameras automatically detect the exact “kick point” and generate precise virtual offside lines, which are then reviewed by VAR. The result: significantly faster and more accurate calls.
A Premier League spokesperson pointed out that the goal of the technology is to minimize delays and improve transparency for fans. “By automating key aspects of the process, the technology aims to reduce delays and enhance decision-making efficiency,” they stated.
The league hopes SAOT will enhance the fan experience, both in-stadium and at home, by reducing VAR-related controversies and maintaining the integrity of the game. The system has already been tested successfully in global tournaments like the FIFA Arab Cup (2021), Club World Cup (2022). It has also been used in UEFA competitions including the Champions League and Super Cup.
