Getting a Nigerian international passport is about to cost a lot more as the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced a sharp increase in passport fees effective September 1, 2025.
Under the new rates, a 32-page passport with 5-year validity will now cost ₦100,000, up from ₦26,000. Meanwhile, a 64-page passport with 10-year validity will go for ₦200,000. This marks one of the biggest jumps in passport fees Nigeria has ever seen.
The NIS explained that the hike is aimed at “sustaining passport reforms, improving service delivery, and ensuring the availability of booklets nationwide.” However, many Nigerians are already expressing frustration online, with some saying the new rates put passports out of reach for the average citizen.
Interestingly, the change only affects applications within Nigeria. For Nigerians living abroad, the fees remain the same — $150 for the 32-page booklet and $230 for the 64-page version.
The new prices are expected to spark debates on affordability, especially with the rising cost of living. Critics argue that such a sudden increase could discourage legal travel and further burden families who rely on international mobility for education, business, and migration opportunities.
Despite the backlash, the Immigration Service insists that the upward review was necessary to keep pace with global standards and enhance security features in Nigerian passports.
With the September 1 deadline fast approaching, many citizens are rushing to complete their applications at the old rates before the new fees kick in.
