Starlink has notified its Nigerian customers of a planned subscription price increase, effective January 27, 2025. New subscribers will immediately pay the updated rates, while existing users will see the changes reflected in their next bills.
In an email to users, the company stated that the price adjustment is part of its efforts to enhance network performance. “To continue enhancing the Starlink network and provide reliable, high-quality service across Nigeria, we are adjusting our monthly subscription prices. These changes are part of our ongoing commitment to investing in the infrastructure needed to improve your experience with Starlink,” the email read.
The lowest subscription tier will rise sharply from ₦38,000 to ₦75,000 per month. The mobile global roaming service will now cost ₦717,000 per month. This is Starlink’s second attempt to raise prices in Nigeria after the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) rejected a previous proposal in October, citing a lack of regulatory approval.
Meanwhile, the NCC is expected to approve tariff adjustments for telecom operators in the first quarter of 2025. Starlink’s timing suggests the company is preparing for this regulatory shift as it adjusts its pricing strategy.
This increase comes at a time when many Nigerian telecom operators have also been pushing for tariff hikes to address rising operational costs. While such adjustments could bring needed improvements to infrastructure and service quality, they may also pose challenges for affordability in a price-sensitive market like Nigeria.
Whether customers will embrace the new pricing or look for alternatives remains to be seen.
