Olubunmi Kuku made history as the first female Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). With over two decades of experience in the aviation industry, her leadership and dedication have been widely recognized.

Kuku has become a symbol of inspiration and leadership in Nigeria’s aviation sector since assuming office in December 2023. She has spearheaded innovative initiatives across Nigerian airports.
Her appointment marked a significant milestone in breaking gender barriers in a traditionally male-dominated field, paving the way for future female leaders and leaving an indelible mark on FAAN’s history.
Under her leadership, there have been notable improvements in infrastructure and airport security enhancements. Kuku personally initiated key measures, including upgrading technology, enhancing personnel training, and improving operational activities,
Kuku successfully completed the refurbishment of the passenger security checkpoint at Zulu Terminal, Lagos Airport’s Domestic Zone in January 2024. This initiative involved a comprehensive overhaul, including the redesign and expansion of the screening area, alongside the installation of cutting-edge EDS-enabled screening machines. These technological upgrades have significantly bolstered operational efficiency, enhancing passenger throughput while alleviating pressure on Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel. Notably, the new equipment has markedly improved the detection of prohibited items and optimized procedures for handling firearms carried by Law Enforcement Officers (LEOs) traveling via air.
Additionally, Kuku’s ongoing project focuses on the deployment of 3,000 units of handheld radios, base stations, vehicle-mounted radios, and repeater stations. This initiative aims to enhance communication capabilities among AVSEC teams, thereby fostering better coordination and response times during security operations.
Addressing longstanding operational challenges, Kuku’s team implemented both immediate and strategic measures to reduce redundant baggage checks. Key among these is the establishment of a joint coordination room equipped with CCTV monitoring capabilities. This facility allows various agencies, including Customs, NDLEA, Quarantine, and Agriculture, to collaborate more effectively, ensuring streamlined processes and minimizing delays for passengers.
Kuku expressed concern over these issues upon assuming her role, emphasizing her proactive approach in liaising with the National Security Adviser (NSA) to streamline facilitation processes. Her efforts reflect a commitment to improving overall airport security and operational efficiency through collaborative initiatives and strategic planning.
