Tigran Gambaryan, the head of financial crime compliance at Binance, is still in custody after his latest bail request was rejected by Nigerian authorities on Monday.
Gambaryan, who has been detained since February, is charged with laundering more than $35 million along with Binance and Nadeem Anjarwalla, the company’s regional manager for Africa.
Gambaryan’s lawyer, Mark Mordi, asked the court for bail due to his worsening health. He explained that Gambaryan suffers from a herniated disc, causing severe neck and back pain, and has also been dealing with malaria and pneumonia.
Mordi said his condition has gotten worse in prison, and he needs medical care.
In court, Gambaryan appeared on crutches and told the judge that prison officials refused to provide him with a wheelchair.
His lawyer also expressed concerns that Gambaryan hasn’t had enough time to prepare for his trial because his legal team has been restricted from seeing him.
However, a lawyer for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which is prosecuting the case, argued that Gambaryan isn’t in serious ill health.
The lawyer pointed out that his herniated disc is a condition he’s had for over ten years.
The court had previously denied Gambaryan bail in May, and after reviewing this new request, the judge adjourned decision until Wednesday.
