DStv’s parent company, MultiChoice, is seriously considering introducing a sports-only subscription package—separate from its regular DStv bundles. This possible service, which is probably going to be referred to as a SuperSport package, would let users watch only sports content without having to pay for entertainment or movie channels.
The moment is right for the idea. In just two years, DStv is said to have lost about 2.8 million subscribers, with 1.2 million of those losses occurring in the 2024–2025 fiscal year alone. A lot of viewers are dropping the full package due to tighter household budgets and groing living expenses. You know what, though, continues to keep people glued to their screens? Sport.
SuperSport channels continue to rank among DStv’s most-watched content, offering everything from Premier League football and Champions League nights to rugby, cricket, and UFC. Calvo Mawela, CEO of MultiChoice, acknowledged that the company is moving quickly to potentially provide sports content independently. “We’re looking at every possibility,” he stated, adding that a decision is probably going to be made by March 2026.
Pricing, availability, and how it will function (as a stand-alone product or as a bolt-on) are still being worked out at this time. However, it’s evident that DStv wants to provide fans—especially those who are solely interested in sports—with more flexible and reasonably priced options.
If this is approved, it could significantly change how South Africans and other Africans watch live sports and help DStv regain subscribers who dropped because of the expensive service.
Fans of sports, keep an eye out because your wish to watch SuperSport exclusively may soon come true.
