A significant milestone in Lagos’s mental health care system is imminent! A 500-bed mental health facility in Ketu-Ejirin, Epe, is being built by the Lagos State Government and is expected to open in late 2025. This facility, which will provide comprehensive care and rehabilitation services, will be the biggest of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa.
Top health officials, including Prof. Akin Abayomi, Lagos State’s Commissioner for Health, recently accompanied Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on their visit to the location. They underlined that this cutting-edge project aims to promote complete recovery and reintegration rather than merely treating mental health conditions.
Beyond this historic hospital, the Lagos government has launched services like the Lagos Lifeline, a helpline offering mental health support and counseling. These moves are part of a larger strategy to destigmatize mental health issues and expand care availability. The facility will also include an annex with a 1,000-bed rehabilitation center designed to provide vocational and recreational therapies. Patients will benefit from tranquil surroundings, boosting their healing journey.
Lagos’ dedication to tackling Nigeria’s mental health crisis is demonstrated by this ground-breaking initiative. “This is about giving hope and a future to those in need,” said Governor Sanwo-Olu.
Lagos is establishing a new standard for mental health treatment in Africa with the promise of a top-notch psychiatric facility.
