Meta’s social media platform, Threads, has achieved 275 million monthly active users, in its quest to challenge X (formerly Twitter). Adam Mosseri, Head of Threads and Instagram, announced the milestone on Sunday, expressing appreciation for users while acknowledging some areas for improvement.
Launched in July 2023, Threads quickly gained traction as a competitor to X, especially after user departures from X following Elon Musk’s acquisition. Threads reached 100 million users in its first week, benefiting from seamless account setup for Instagram users. However, engagement initially declined as some users explored other social networks or returned to existing platforms.
In response, Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg reassured investors in April that user growth was progressing as planned.
“There are now more than 150M monthly activities, and it continues to generally be on the trajectory I hoped to see.” The platform’s appeal has grown since, with active users increasing 57% since July to reach 275 million today.
To retain users, Meta has actively introduced new features. Threads has begun integrating with ActivityPub, the protocol powering decentralized networks like Mastodon, enabling user posts to be seen on other connected servers. Since March, U.S. users over 18 can link their accounts to the decentralized network, reflecting Meta’s goal of supporting open internet standards through Threads.
Meta’s commitment to growth and innovation has helped Threads maintain its momentum, positioning it as a key player in the evolving social media landscape.
