High-stakes two-hour call between a U.S. leader and Russian President Vladimir Putin has resulted in Russia and Ukraine agreeing to immediately begin negotiations toward a ceasefire and potentially a formal end to the war.
Describing the discussion as “excellent” in tone and outcome, the U.S. leader confirmed that both Moscow and Kyiv are now preparing to engage in direct talks. While the framework and conditions for the ceasefire will be determined solely by the two nations involved, this marks one of the most significant moves toward peace since the conflict began.
“The tone and spirit of the conversation were excellent. If it wasn’t, I would say so now, rather than later,” POTUS Trump remarked, emphasizing the sincerity of both parties. It was also noted that only Russia and Ukraine possess the full context needed to shape the terms of the agreement.
Shortly after the call with President Putin, the U.S. leader held follow-up discussions with key global figures, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb, briefing them on the outcome and the path forward.
In a noteworthy development, Pope Leo has expressed the Vatican’s interest in hosting the upcoming negotiations, offering a neutral and symbolic venue for what could be a pivotal peace process.
President Putin, according to the POTUS Trump also conveyed a strong desire to pursue large-scale trade with the United States once the “catastrophic bloodbath” is over. “There is a tremendous opportunity for Russia to create massive amounts of jobs and wealth. Its potential is unlimited,” the U.S. leader said. Ukraine, likewise, is expected to benefit significantly through international trade as it undertakes the massive task of rebuilding its war-torn infrastructure.
