President Trump announced a new $500 billion private-sector investment initiative on Tuesday. The aim of this initiative is to build advanced artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in the United States. The project, named Stargate, is a joint venture between OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle.
Joined by SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, and Oracle’s Larry Ellison at the White House briefing, Trump hammered on the importance of developing AI domestically. “We want to keep it in this country,” Trump said, calling China and others competitors in the AI race. He also pledged to support the initiative through emergency declarations to streamline operations, including energy production.
Stargate’s initial phase includes constructing 10 data centers in Texas, with more planned in other states, according to Ellison. The project is expected to generate over 100,000 American jobs and strengthen the country’s AI capabilities.
“This will be the most important project of this era,” Altman said. He said there’s potential for AI to revolutionize healthcare, including unprecedented advancements in curing diseases.
While further details of the partnership remain under wraps, Trump confirmed that additional investors are expected to join Stargate.
