The women’s basketball team from Nigeria, D’Tigress, has once again shown that they are more than just players; they are future legends! The fierce women won the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2025 finals in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, on Sunday, defeating Mali 78-64 to win the tournament for the fifth time in a row.
D’Tigress played like queens of the court from beginning to end, displaying tenacity, vigor, and the desire to create history. With this triumph, Nigeria has extended their winning streak in the tournament to an incredible 29 games, making them the first team in history to win five consecutive AfroBasket titles.
Prior to the championship game, D’Tigress thrashed Cameroon in the quarterfinals (83–47) and defeated Senegal in a fierce semifinal (75–68). The team didn’t just win; they dominated, and every game felt like a show.
Supported by fervent coaching and a team that understood the stakes, players like Amy Okonkwo and Sarah Ogoke brought the fire to the court. They were obviously protecting a legacy rather than just playing, as evidenced by their quick breaks and tenacious defense.
There’s more to this victory than a trophy. It sends a message to the world and Africa: Nigerian women are formidable athletes. One thing is clear as pride and celebration erupt on social media: D’Tigress is rewriting history, one slam dunk at a time.
Nigeria, defend your heroes! 🏀🇳🇬
