Andela, the company that became a unicorn by growing from a talent outsourcing firm, has now hired Carrol Chang, an ex-Uber executive, as its new CEO. She takes over from Jeremy Johnson, a co-founder of Andela who will remain on the board.
She will be joining the company’s board come September 17th. She previously held positions at McKinsey & Company, worked as global head of driver and courier operations for Uber, and the Department of Homeland Security.
“I am deeply grateful for the privilege to lead Andela. It’s rare to find a mission-driven company that also has the potential to create a category-defining business. I’m inspired by the way Jeremy has led Andela to this point, and I appreciate the trust he and the Board now put in me to carry forward its mission,” said Chang.
This is happening in light of the ten year old company trying to grab a bigger share in the worldwide talents market. In the beginning it trained African software developers for US companies and others before eventually becoming a marketplace for talents. In 2021, after SoftBank led a $200 million series E funding round, it became a unicorn. The organization went into Latin America and South America during this time period too.
In an undisclosed transaction Qualified, an assessment platform that certifies top engineering talents, was acquired by Andela in 2023.
“After ten years, I’m deeply proud of the change we’ve helped to catalyze. That said, it’s clear that global hiring is at the beginning of a complete digital transformation, and Carrol is the perfect leader both for Andela’s next stage of growth and to help usher in the era of talent marketplaces,” said Johnson.
Founded in 2014, Andela has grew into Africa’s number one source for top developers with its curriculum and training methodology.
