Health statistics released by the Lagos State Government are startling! According to Health Commissioner Professor Akin Abayomi, 8.67 million people in Lagos suffer from hypertension. Even more startling is the fact that 1.73 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes, and 3.48 million people suffer from obesity. Often referred to as “silent killers,” these chronic illnesses are becoming more prevalent in Lagos, endangering a large number of individuals without their knowledge.
The government has started a campaign called “Know Your Numbers and Control Your Numbers” to address this problem. From October 28 to November 3, 2024, this program provides free diabetes and hypertension testing throughout the state. In order to help locals identify possible health problems early on, the state plans to provide free screening and testing to at least 800,000 people through this health initiative.
According to Professor Abayomi, addressing these illnesses requires early detection and knowledge. He expressed optimism by saying, “We might even get more than 800,000 people tested at the end of the week.” Untreated obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure can result in major problems including heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure, which is why this screening is so important.
The ad emphasizes how critical it is to comprehend one’s health statistics. Blood pressure, blood sugar, and body weight are important metrics that everyone should monitor, particularly since diabetes and hypertension sometimes develop without any outward signs. The government is encouraging Lagosians to take their health seriously by providing these screenings at no cost.
Be sure to take advantage of this chance if you live in Lagos. Perhaps the first step to a healthier future is a fast check-up. Besides, who doesn’t like free things, especially when they have the potential to save their lives?
