Google.org has announced a significant N2.8 billion grant as part of its larger commitment of $5.8 million to enhance digital skills initiatives across Sub-Saharan Africa. This funding aims to support Data Science Nigeria’s collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy (FMCIDE) in advancing artificial intelligence (AI) talent development programs, targeting the upskilling of youth and addressing unemployment among Nigerians.
Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, highlighted the grant’s vital role in Nigeria’s digital transformation. “This support from Google underscores our dedication to positioning Nigeria at the forefront of AI innovation,” he stated. “By leveraging Google’s expertise and resources, we are creating pathways for Nigerians to acquire essential skills that will enable them to succeed in the global digital economy. This marks a pivotal advancement towards a more inclusive and innovative future for all.”
Matt Brittin, President of Google for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to fostering Africa’s innovation landscape. “Entrepreneurs across the continent are utilizing technology, including AI, to tackle significant societal challenges,” Brittin remarked. “Google is dedicated to empowering these innovators to expand their reach and impact. Our ongoing work in Africa focuses on unlocking the benefits of the digital economy for a broader audience, and this partnership reinforces that mission.”
Additionally, the Ministry and Google unveiled the recipients of the AI Fund, established by the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) in partnership with Google. Each selected startup will receive N100 million in funding and up to $3.5 million in Google Cloud Credits, enabling them to scale their innovative solutions. The startups will also gain access to Google’s advanced AI tools, expert mentorship, and opportunities to engage with a global network of innovators and partners.
