The Magistrate Court in Sabo, Yaba, Lagos State, has cleared Naira Marley and three others of any involvement in the death of singer Mohbad. On Tuesday, February 25, 2025, Magistrate Ejiro Kubenje announced the decision following legal advice from the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Naira Marley, whose real name is Azeez Fashola, was acquitted along with music promoter Samson Balogun, popularly known as Sam Larry, Owodunni Ibrahim, also called Primeboy, and Mohbad’s former manager, Opere Babatunde. The DPP’s report found no evidence linking them to Mohbad’s death, leading to their release from any legal proceedings.
Mohbad’s unexpected death on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27, sparked months of public conjecture and controversy before the announcement. After Mohbad, a former signee of Naira Marley’s Marlian Records, passed away inexplicably, there were many demands for justice.
Although Naira Marley and the others were exonerated, the DPP suggested that Mohbad’s companion Ayobami Sadiq and auxiliary nurse Feyisayo Ogedengbe face charges for their careless and dangerous behavior. The Magistrate Court will continue their trial.
The decision allows Naira Marley, Sam Larry, Primeboy, and Opere Babatunde to move on from the case and ends their legal struggles. But as the court looks for the whole truth behind Mohbad’s untimely demise, the public keeps a careful eye on the situation.
