Former presidential spokesperson and politician Dr. Doyin Okupe passed away at the age of 72. On March 7, 2025, family members and close associates announced his death.
Okupe had spent years dealing with health problems. 16 years ago, he was initially diagnosed with prostate cancer. Later, he got sarcoma in his right shoulder. His illness deteriorated in recent months despite treatment, and he was admitted to a hospital in Lagos. According to reports, he died while undergoing surgery.
Before entering politics, Okupe, who was born in Iperu, Ogun State, attended the University of Ibadan to study medicine. A prominent player in Nigerian politics, he co-founded the Royal Cross Medical Centre in Lagos. His position as a media advisor to former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan was crucial to the communication of the government.
After being found guilty of money laundering in December 2022, Okupe was given a two-year prison sentence with the possibility of a fine, which he paid. He was compelled by the conviction to resign from his position as Director-General of Peter Obi’s presidential campaign.
People from coworkers and political figures have started to pay their respects. Okupe’s death was characterized as a personal loss by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, who also highlighted his contributions to public affairs and governance.
Aduralere, his wife, and their kids are left behind by Okupe. He will be remembered for his work as a physician, political strategist, and public servant.
