After winning their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) championship in Morocco, Nigeria’s Super Falcons were greeted with hero’s rap when they returned home. On Monday, July 28, the victorious team landed in Abuja after defeating host country Morocco 3-2 in a thrilling comeback in the final two days earlier.
Fans lined the streets of Abuja to celebrate their champions, and the atmosphere was electric. Showing off their hard-earned trophy, the team traveled through important locations such as Airport Road, Berger Junction, Wuse Market, and Maitama in an open-roof bus.
It was not an easy win for the Falcons. The team rallied after falling behind 2-0 thanks to goals from Asisat Oshoala, Rasheedat Ajibade, and a late winner from Jennifer Echegini.
President Bola Tinubu personally welcomed the team at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, where the festivities reached their climax. He pledged to keep supporting women’s football and congratulated them on making the country proud.
Winning a record 10th continental title, the Falcons’ “Mission X” campaign has been credited with their success.
Nigeria’s victory confirms its supremacy in African women’s football, and the celebrations at home demonstrate how much the victory means to the locals.
