The world recently recognized Lagos as one of the world’s top 20 cuisine cities! Known for its rich and varied culinary culture that combines traditional and contemporary dishes, the energetic Nigerian metropolis comes in at number seven on Time Out’s list.
Lagos provides both residents and tourists with a feast, ranging from the smokey, spicy suya available on street corners to the hearty warmth of Ofe Nsala (white soup) to the Afro-Brazilian influence of Frejon (coconut and black bean dinner). A traditional breakfast option is Akara (bean fritters) with Agege bread, while Boli (grilled plantain) is still a popular street snack. Additionally, the golden, deep-fried treat known as Puff-Puff is a must-try for anyone with a sweet craving.
Nigerian cuisine is given a modern twist at restaurants like ILÉ IYÁN, NOK by Alara, and Slow Lagos, but Lagos isn’t just about heritage.
Lagos’ affordability is one of the main reasons it made the list. According to a survey, 88% of residents think getting a drink won’t break the bank, and 68% of them think eating out is affordable. In addition to being inexpensive, 78% of respondents said the dish was tasty, nutritious, traditional, and convenient.
It’s not Lagos’ only significant victory. Ahead of international hotspots like Miami and Dubai, Time Out also named it the 19th greatest city to visit in 2024.
If you haven’t yet, now is the perfect moment to discover Lagos’ culinary scene. Every foodie may find something they enjoy in the city, whether it’s fine dining or roadside treats!
