The Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line has officially commenced partial passenger operations on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, following a successful six-week trial period.
In this initial phase, trains will operate four trips each day between Oyingbo and Agbado in Ogun State. This represents a major advancement in Lagos State’s efforts to enhance and modernize its transportation network.
Kolawole Ojelabi, Head of Corporate Communication at the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), confirmed the start of these operations. The Red Line is a crucial component of the Strategic Transport Master Plan (STMP) for Lagos, which envisions six rail lines and one monorail. This new line will significantly improve connectivity between Lagos and Ogun State, home to many who commute to Lagos for work and business.
The partial operations will initially include selected non-paying passengers from August 28 to September 27. These passengers will help test the system’s performance and provide valuable feedback on its efficiency and overall user experience. This feedback will be vital for making final adjustments to ensure the system meets the highest standards of safety, reliability, and commuter satisfaction before a full public launch.
