Lagos State is preparing for a revolution in transportation! In a landmark decision, the Federal Government and the Lagos State Government have joined forces to begin construction of a 68-kilometer Green Line rail project. Connecting Marina, Victoria Island (VI), Lekki, and Ajah, this ambitious rail route will reach the Lekki Free Trade Zone.
The agreement, which was signed in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), aims to alleviate the infamous traffic congestion in Lagos and change the way Lagos residents commute. Gbenga Omotoso, Lagos State’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, verified the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at a Citizen/Media Stakeholders Forum.
In order to demonstrate its commitment, the Federal Government has set aside a sizeable N146.14 billion for the rail project as counterpart money in the 2025 budget. The commitment of both governments to offer citizens dependable, effective public transportation options is demonstrated by this funding.
By cutting travel times and providing an alternative to the congested roadways, the Green Line rail project is anticipated to help millions of commuters. Experts predict an economic benefit as well because the rail line will link important corporate centers throughout the city.
Construction timelines are yet to be revealed, but Lagosians are hopeful that this bold project will live up to its promise of reshaping urban mobility.
