The Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN, has initiated high-level discussions with Carlos Garcete, the Brazilian Ambassador to Nigeria. This engagement aims to activate the Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) and facilitate direct flights between the two nations.
The discussions are a follow-up to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2018, which laid the groundwork for increased aviation collaboration. The recent meeting aligns with the shared interests of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who agreed during a February 2024 meeting in Addis Ababa to revisit the BASA arrangements, acknowledging the cultural and economic ties binding their countries.
Ambassador Garcete emphasized the potential for launching 4 to 5 flights per week, stating, “The introduction of direct flights will spark significant economic growth between our countries.” However, he pointed out that the finalization of the Open Skies Agreement is crucial for the successful implementation of these flights.
Minister Keyamo expressed optimism about the prospects of the BASA, stating, “There are numerous similarities between Nigeria and Brazil. Activating these flights will not only enhance trade but also strengthen cultural and social exchanges.
As discussions continue, both nations look forward to realizing the benefits of improved air connectivity, fostering stronger bilateral relations and economic development.
