After weeks of negotiations and threats of a strike, the labour unions and the government have reached an agreement. On Thursday, July 18, 2024, President Tinubu announced the decisions made during a meeting held with leaders of TUC and NLC in Abuja. This meeting marked the second time the parties convened in seven days.
“The Labour leaders applauded President Tinubu for his leadership,” stated President Tinubu’s special adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga. “President Tinubu has approved a minimum wage of N70,000 for Nigerian workers, and has committed to reviewing the national minimum wage law every three years.”
President Tinubu also pledged to utilize his discretionary powers to address the demands of university unions seeking payment for four months of unpaid salaries. Additionally, he vowed to explore avenues to support the private sector and sub-national entities in meeting the minimum wage requirements.
