After confirming that six of its employees perished in the fire outbreak that engulfed Afriland Towers on Broad Street, Lagos Island, on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, United Capital Plc has been placed into mourning.
The business released a statement calling the incident “a profound loss” and revealing that the deceased were “part of our company and family” in addition to being employees. The six colleagues’ deaths, according to management, have left “an immeasurable void” in the hearts of their loved ones and coworkers.
United Capital also declared that preparations are in progress for a memorial service to honor the victims and promised to provide the bereaved families with their undivided support. The company went on to say, “We offer our sincere condolences to their families, friends, and loved ones during this most trying time.”
At least ten people have died as a result of the Afriland Tower fire thus far, including four employees of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), which also uses the high-rise structure for operations. United Capital commended emergency services for their “strengthy efforts” in fighting the fire and assisting with rescue efforts.
Afriland Towers, a six-storey complex, houses several businesses and government offices. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the incident has sparked conversations about safety compliance in corporate buildings across Lagos.
For now, families, friends, and colleagues of the victims continue to grieve, while United Capital and FIRS are preparing to hold memorials in honour of the lives lost.
