Heroes Who Never Stop Motivating
It’s the ideal moment to reflect on the amazing accomplishments of Nigerian athletes while the thrill of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris is still very much present in our thoughts. Let’s not overlook the illustrious athletes who have cleared the path and merited their position as the most decorated athletes in Nigerian history, even as we honor our newest Olympic heroes.
Let’s start with football sensation Asisat Oshoala, who has wowed fans worldwide. Oshoala made her name in Spain with Barcelona, where she scored an incredible 117 goals in 162 appearances. She is currently playing for Bay FC in the United States. With three Women’s Champions League trophies, three Copa de la Reina victories, and five Primera División titles, her trophy cabinet is brimming. Six times, she has won the African Women’s Footballer of the Year award.
Let’s change the subject to boxing. In 1957, Hogan “Kid” Basse became the first-ever Nigerian world boxing champion. It was only the beginning when he defeated Cherif Hamia in Paris to win the WBA world featherweight title. In addition, Basse won the Empire featherweight championship and was bestowed with Nigeria’s highest honor, the Order of the Niger.
Next is football player Nwankwo Kanu, a household name due to his talent and accomplishments. Among other leagues, Kanu’s career is adorned with championships from the Nigerian Premier League, Eredivisie, Premier League, and Champions League. Kanu, who was twice awarded African Footballer of the Year, is an inspiration to us all.
Still, there are other stars. Success on a global scale has been experienced by Teslim “Thunder” Balogun, Dick Tiger, Lucy Ejike, Stephen Keshi, and numerous others. Young Nigerians look up to these athletes as role models because they exemplify the spirit of perseverance and excellence that has defined our country’s sporting history.
