The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) in person of Lateeef Fabgemi has announced plans to intervene following the arraignment of several individuals charged with serious offenses, including treason.
Reports indicate that the police have brought the arrested protesters before the court, where they have been remanded to detention centers pending further proceedings, which are now scheduled for January.
The AGF acknowledged the complexities of the case, stating, “My office will need to review the details to make an informed decision.” He emphasized that while he cannot alter the court’s remand order, he has taken proactive steps to ensure that the case receives appropriate attention.
To facilitate this, the AGF has instructed the Nigeria Police to transfer the complete case file to his office by Saturday, November 2, 2024. Furthermore, he has directed the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation (DPPF) to initiate measures for requesting an earlier hearing date.
As the situation unfolds, the AGF’s involvement marks a crucial step in addressing the legal ramifications of the protests and ensuring a fair judicial process.
