E-hailing drivers in Nigeria, under the banner of the Amalgamated Union of App-based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), are advocating for a federal regulatory framework. This is to help streamline the industry across the country.
AUATON’s South-West Vice-President, Mr. Kolawole Aina pointed out that e-hailing drivers operating through platforms like Uber, Bolt, and Indrive are active in 26 states, including the Federal Capital Territory. However, he noted that 15 to 17 states have implemented their own regulations, which often disadvantage the drivers. “We as a national union are looking at a federal regulatory framework that will actually centre around all the stakeholders,” Aina says that is important for a balanced system that considers the interests of the government, app companies, drivers, and passengers.
The proposed national framework aims to address several pressing issues, including the reduction of multiple taxation on drivers. Aina explained that current state-level regulations result in drivers bearing the brunt of the financial burden, despite contributing significantly to the economy. He also stressed the need for better collaboration between app companies, governments, and drivers to ensure smoother business operations.
AUATON has also raised concerns about the safety of drivers, particularly regarding kidnapping incidents. Aina suggested that a federal framework could improve security by introducing passenger profiling, similar to the profiling drivers undergo. “We need the government to listen to our demands. We are taxpayers and contribute to the economy, so we need to be listened to,” Aina added.
AUATON, a registered trade union under the Ministry of Labour and Employment and an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress, represents a diverse group of app-based transport workers. The union was officially recognized in 2023 after a long struggle for unionization, which began in 2016 when Uber unilaterally reduced drivers’ income by 40%.
With a national framework, AUATON hopes to create a more equitable and sustainable environment for all stakeholders in Nigeria’s e-hailing industry.
